Subject: [Nnn] Call for Chapters for MAA Notes on Quantitative Literacy
Greetings all,
It has been roughly fifteen years since Steen et al.'s Mathematics and Democracy, and much has happened since its release. This is a call for chapter proposals for a new volume on quantitative literacy and reasoning in the MAA Notes Series. The goal is to update the work that has occurred in relation to quantitative literacy since the last MAA Notes publication on the topic a decade ago. This new text will have several themes, including vision (e.g., is QL evolving?), equity and social justice (e.g., discourse, power and authority, social justice curriculum), trends in curriculum (e.g., Pathways, the Common Core), assessment, technology (e.g., online learning, social media), and pedagogy, among other potential topics (e.g., a tribute to Lynn Steen). There will also be a space for critical reflective essays for individuals interested in meditating on the past and future of quantitative literacy.
This is our initial "who and what" call to see who is interested in writing about various topics. We are very excited to see updates and new revelations that would be of interest to those in the quantitative literacy community.
If you are interested in writing a chapter for this text, please fill out this brief Google Form<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1yp2z6biQeScODdv6L1AUoVnKU-VgEwOIBMUp9BkfjWg/viewform> to express your interest by June 1st. You will be asked which theme your chapter falls into, whom you will be writing with (if anyone), and for an abstract of your proposal. If there are several individuals interested in writing about a similar topic (e.g., inquiry-based learning), we will contact you and the authors about either collaborating or choosing a different topic.
The following is our (tentative) timeline for the project:
* June 1st: proposals due
* July 1st: proposed table of contents sent to MAA
* August 1st: notifications and commentary sent to authors
* October 1st: chapter drafts due
* January 15th: feedback given to authors
* March 1st: revised chapters due
* April 1st: send manuscript to MAA
We look forward to receiving your proposals. Please feel free to forward this call to those you believe might be interested!
The Editor Team: Luke Tunstall, Victor Piercey, and Gizem Karaali
