Hi All,
I have been asked by the QLit. Committee to check out other QLit.
Centers (Learning Centers, Tutoring Spaces), to get information about
space allocation. Could you please send a short description of your
facility (tutoring spaces, studying areas, computer labs, offices,
hours), and send it to me so that I can show the dean how our space
compares to others.
Currently, our QLit. Center is in a small classroom which is still used
for seminars in the morning, but is reserved for tutoring and computer
lab use in the afternoon and evening. We are open from 2-4 on Sunday,
2-6 on Mon. through Thursday, and 7-9 Sunday through Thursday, plus 3-5
on Friday just for calculus help. Some days there is over-flow into the
hall. The office is open during the morning and afternoon.
Our Quantitative Literacy Requirement changed this year. for the
classes of 2014 and after, the requirement is called QSR, or
Quantitative & symbolic Reasoning with a one course requirement:
/Hamilton expects that every student will demonstrate facility in
quantitative and symbolic reasoning by completing *one or more courses
*in at least one of the following three categories:/
1. /*Statistical Analysis.* The use of statistical analysis to
describe data and to make inferences./
2. /*Mathematical Representation.* The use of mathematical models
such as those based on graphs, equations and geometric objects to
represent patterns, relationships and forms./
3. /*Logic and Symbolic Reasoning.* The use of formal logic or
symbolic reasoning such as in the following examples: the proper
construction of a computer program or a formal proof; the analysis
of language in linguistics; or the study of music theory./
I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks, and best wishes for a fine year.
Mary
