Vassar College: Director of Quantitative Reasoning Center
Vassar College invites applications from candidates for the position
of founding Director of a new Quantitative Reasoning Center. The
director will establish a Quantitative Reasoning Center within our
Learning, Teaching and Research Center to enhance students'
quantitative reasoning abilities and contribute to faculty
development initiatives for teaching quantitative reasoning across
the curriculum. The director's responsibilities include training and
overseeing student peer tutors, including those in our Supplemental
Instruction Program in math, chemistry and physics; consulting with
faculty teaching courses that fulfill the College's Quantitative
Reasoning requirement; teaching one or two courses yearly; and
developing means to assess programs of the QRC.
Vassar's Learning, Teaching and Research Center was established in
2004. It currently houses a program in faculty teaching and research
development, and a Writing Center. The director of the Quantitative
Reasoning Center will work closely with the director of the LTRC and
the director of the Writing Center to enhance student skills; provide
programs to enrich faculty teaching and research; and collaborate
with other college offices that support student learning, including
the Offices of the Dean of Studies and Disability and Support
Services. The new QRC is an eagerly awaited component of our
comprehensive LTRC.
Located in the scenic mid-Hudson Valley, 90 miles north of New York
City, Vassar College is a highly selective, residential,
co-educational liberal arts college. Vassar is strongly committed to
fostering a community that reflects the values of a liberal arts
education and to promoting an environment of equality, inclusion and
respect for difference. Vassar College is an affirmative action,
equal opportunity employer, and applications from historically
underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.
Successful applicants will demonstrate an ability to develop and lead
a program that enhances quantitative reasoning skills consonant with
the college's general education requirements. The ability to interact
effectively with students and collaborate with faculty and staff is
essential. A Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline is
required, and experience teaching at the college level preferred.
This is a full-time administrative position with some teaching
opportunity. This assignment is expected to last for three years,
with a possible extension.
To apply for this position, submit letter of application, CV, and a
statement of your vision for a quantitative reasoning center. In
addition, you must have three professional references submit letters
of recommendation. All materials are to be submitted electronically
