You can check if mysql service is running by pressing Ctrl_Alt_Delete and
look for mysqlnt or sth like that. If it is initiated then it must be there.

I tried mysql and mysqladmin, to no avail. I had been using root for a
while, and I keep getting an "Error 0:" message in place of "Could not
connect". I don't know if that's any more of a help. Googling "MySQL
Error 0:" brings up results labeling the error as "Cannot create Windows
service for MySql". I'm not exactly sure what that means.
