its either root or mysql or mysqladmin, depending how you set it up.  yeah, you need a username...i dont think mysql supports usernameless binding

I'm trying to run my PHP script, and when it gets to the part where it
connects to the database, it dies with the error "Could not connect."
(using the same conditional from the example). I'm connecting to the
server "localhost", using username "" (no username), with the password I
selected in the installation. I'm positive that the password is correct
(I just tried pasting it into the password prompt in the MySQL command
line interpreter and it worked). I'm pretty sure that I don't need a
username there, if I didn't specifically add any users, right?
